Associate Communications Strategist

Associate communications strategists are midlevel professionals who serve in both tactical and strategic management roles, implementing projects for some clients while managing plan development and growing as team leaders for others. In some agencies, they are referred to as “account executives.”

Associate communications strategists report to communications strategists and the firm’s senior officers. They may take direction and lead implementation of projects for some accounts, while providing direction and managing successful implementation of strategic plans for others.

They are expected to be self-starters with ambition to:

  • Deliver completed work that needs little or no editing and encourage junior team members to do the same.
  • Bring fresh ideas to client and internal meetings.
  • Remain knowledgeable on emerging trends, issues and opportunities important to our company and clients.
  • Complete assignments on deadline and maintain accountability for how account teams are spending time on behalf of clients.
  • Proactively seek feedback and participate in professional development activities.


  • Strategic Project Management – Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic plans to achieve client goals and objectives. Delegate tasks and supervise work by junior team members. Ensure work is managed efficiently to maximize clients’ investment and company profitability.
  • Client Relations – Maintain regular communication with clients to review progress against strategic plans, and to identify emerging opportunities and issues.
  • Business Development – Represent Curley & Pynn to current and potential clients by providing thought leadership through blog posts and social media content, and through involvement in community organizations and professional associations. Seek opportunities to expand the scope of work for existing clients and assist with new business proposals.
  • Writing – Clearly communicate through the written word in various formats, including research reports, news releases, feature stories and fact sheets, website copy, email newsletters, business memos, etc. No skill is more important.
  • Research – Conduct comprehensive research to support agency and client projects, digging deeply to fully assess and understand the topic.
  • Media Relations – Identify and pursue newsworthy story angles. Build relationships with reporters, create media databases and actively pitch story ideas. Manage online monitoring resources, document stories that are important to our clients and develop client-facing coverage reports.
  • Event Coordination – Distribute invitations and manage guest registrations. Liaise with vendors and volunteers, and coordinate operational elements such as seating and staging. Host media and VIP guests.
  • Social Media Management – Monitor social media for mentions of our clients, identify and build relationships with social influencers, and outline content calendars and copy appropriate for various channels.
  • Business Development – Represent Curley & Pynn to current and potential clients by providing thought leadership through blog posts and social media content, and through membership in community organizations and professional associations.


  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations or a related field
  • 2-4 years of professional experience (agency experience preferred)
  • Experience managing projects
  • Portfolio of writing samples
  • Success pitching and securing media coverage

Internship Program

Curley & Pynn’s internship is an ideal experience for student leaders and recent graduates who seek to apply their knowledge of public relations and marketing communications strategies and tactics in a real-world setting. Interns report to Curley & Pynn’s communications specialists and communications strategists, who direct assignments while fostering a supportive, constructive mentoring relationship.


Intern responsibilities may include:

  • Writing news releases and newsletter articles
  • Online and traditional research
  • Coordinating and staffing special events
  • Developing media lists, pitching and documenting press coverage
  • Brainstorming concepts and developing content for marketing collateral

Interns are expected to be self-starters and take initiative. This requires:

  • Writing effective copy devoid of spelling or grammar errors;
  • Preparing presentations based upon independent research and input from clients and other team members;
  • Conducting outreach as necessary through email and phone calls, and proactively reporting results; and,
  • Completing assignments on time and maintaining accountability for how time is spent on behalf of clients.


Ideal internship candidates are college juniors or seniors in public relations or a related degree program, or recent graduates who have earned a degree in public relations or a related field within the last six months. Applicants must have prior internship experience; agency experience is preferred.


Interns are compensated at an hourly rate of $12 for hours worked above time required for school credit. Those not earning credit receive the hourly rate of $12 for all hours worked.


An internship schedule totaling at least 20 hours per week will be determined upon hiring.
